Pixel perfection

GraphicsSoftware

Sometimes an application can look kinda wrong due to very small details, few pixels can make or ruin the first impact. And since today a lot of monitors, especially laptop ones have to use fractional scaling, making things look sharp and pixel perfect is even harder.

Here is System Settings, on a screen scaled at 175%:

Here is zoomed, you can see some separators being one pixel, some other being two, usually blurred, making them appear of significantly different colors:

It was something that always annoyed me, so this is how System Settings will look with the next Kirigami that will come with the next Frameworks release in the beginning of November:

Here zoomed:

Separators are now 2 perfectly sharp pixels everywhere on 175%, giving the app a much cleaner look.

This will apply to every application which uses the Separator QML component. There are of course a lot of similar details fixes to do (and yes, I can see several ones still in the above screenshot), but sometimes small polishes can look like a big improvement 🙂

Thanks for your work on this! I am looking forward to it. It is definitely a nice improvement!

Perhaps it would be better to remove these separators, so KDE stops resembling an Excel spreadsheet? 😉
Has such a change been considered?

why pixeled, if it’s works other without pixel, look on the SVG as example, this can be zoomed and no pixeling is deploy, so, why working with some graphics, today it’s also possible to work with svg where it is UHD zooming possible without pixeling.., look my iconthemes at pling (search for “blacky” or “kry”) there can you zooming in, as example in Inkscape and there is no Pixeling the same technik could take in Plasma/KDE .. the old Technik is taken by all, because it’s “Normal” this to use like them, but the time is slowly comes to try to change the thinking because we have UHD Screens… it is like Trinity Desktop and the new versions of SVG, they must first get it to exist new versions of SVG and the SVG-Engine should be updated to a more new one.. for “eat” the more new SVG with diabled Layers of SVG for not see all layers, also if they are diasbled, this is at Plasma too, they must first get it to exist other way to displaying something and this must easy just a different type of screen displaying.. towards a non-pixel output that is subsequently sharper than a knife.. to support more directly an UltraHD output.
    That’s just my thought ..

and by the way, the Seperator is well and works, it’s need’s 2 Color for the eye, for have a Lighter side and a shadow side, you can make it more 3D if you set up in the middle a stripe with a color in the middle of the light n’ shadow , and maybe a dark transparent in the background with maybe 30% transparency as shadow of the separator, therewith looks more as a “elevation with shadow” a Shadow with transparency makes very much in a picture .. specially in a picture with different backgrounds, makes the transparency black (or darkgray * )+30% Transparency the magic of 3D.

      * for standing out on the dark/black background
