Multitouch screencast overload

Software

Going a bit more deeply on how KDE SC 4.4 will support multitouch, here are 3 longer videos:

The first one shows marble. Is now possible (with the usual disclaimer on devices and systems that support it, hoping it will become a more pervasive feature) to zoom the earth with a two fingers gesture, making a retty natural interacion

The second one shows Plasma: it’s possible to move, resize and rotate the widgets with two fingers, making them a bit more “real objects”. Another place of Plasma that supports multitouch is the “Blackboard” widget (painting with two fingers simultaneously ftv) and all the animated scroll widgets, such as the one used in the microblogging plasmoid and in the netbook and the webkit based widget.

OGG version

The last one shows in detail the Webbrowser widget, in particular two fingers scrolling (note that is still possible to select text with a single finger, while scrolling with two) and pinch zoom with two fingers again, all correctly maped to any transformation the widget can have.

Oh this is soooo nice. The potential is enormous and leaves nothing closed for our creativities.

For example. 2 finger rotating seems physically awkward. One could imagine once a plasma widget is touched, a small circle appears that it you grab ind the middle lets you move and if you grab on the edge lets you rotate, all with one finger…

Thanks to qt and thanks to kde for all being so innovative.

    Nice feature!
but is that windows? Why? It is like a good DE mied with a bad DE (windows interface).

    Qt is graet!

You insensitive croud, now I want to buy a multitouch device just for this… thanks a lot.

I can really see some potential in this for my desktop, if I only had a multitouch screen to play with.

One thing, why do the widgets seem to get much smaller than you drop them?

Ah, now I see your post “Cuteness 4.6” (I think the antispam system doesn’t allow links to you own blog?)
And what about MPX in XServer 1.7. Is that not enough?
How can we make this work in a Linux distro?

  5. jrdls

Nop, MPX isn’t enough, MPX only allows you to have multiple mouses and multiple keyboards I believe but doesn’t provide multitouch support. I’ve seen the mpx demo video on youtube and if you look closely you don’t ever see a “pinch” gesture or a rotating gesture, both being multitouch gestures.

It would be nice if the points on the map and the position of the fingers kept connected during a two finger zoom. So you can fix for example the center of the zoom (the location you want to see in a higher resoultion) with one finger and use the other for setting the scale.

I think this would improve the realistic feeling even more.

I *have* a laptop with the hardware to do this (Dell Latitude XT) and the current (pre release) version of KDE SC 4.4. How do you “enable” this in KDE assuming the Kernel / Xorg etc are all recent enough and configured correctly?
