Another update on the Plasma netbook project: in this little video i’ll show the last improvements of the so called newspaper activity, little things that however have all their own place in the big picture:
- Slightly different look, the wallpaper is more visible and there are less margins
- Widgets have titlebars, that shows the widget name as well 3 buttons: the close button, configure and the new associated application launcher i presented the last time (it has been designed with the netbook shell in mind)
- Some days ago, Adenilson and Igor came up with a really nice patch to animate the scrolling widgets used by Plasma: now everything that uses it, from the newspaper activity to the microblogging plasmoid automatically got a way more smooth and organic look and feel, hats off to them
- Is now possible to create and delete newspaper activities, to have as much “pages” as one likes, selectable by the top toolbar
In this video it’s also possible to see more changes, both in the panel and in the Search and Lauch activity, but this is for the next time! (i love teasing people 🙂
As usual, the screencasting appliation has a pretty poor refresh rate and pretty bad refresh problems, to this does not actually reflect 100% the real thing:)
You are advancing at a great pace. The Plasma netbook project is fantastic.
I have a few aesthetic opinions:
– I don’t like the bounciness of the scrolling animation. I think an ease-out only animation would be great because it would feel organic but not “bouncy”.
– I like the buttons of close, config and fullview. But since they are continuously appearing and disappearing, it would be nicer to have them more translucent. This way it would be less distracting.
– The hover of the item view seems a bit too slow, it would be nice if it would snap more quickly to the elements.
Anyway these are just opinions. I looking forward to trying this out on my netbook.
thanks!!
Great project but I think it would be a good feature for the newspaper, when the informations (rss, opendesktop or rss data) are cached, that there isn’t a blank screen when there is no internet connection available.
I love the way you guys integrated the titlebar and the buttons. Will this change only be in the netbook-shell or will all the widgets have this?
Also: Cannot wait to test this stuff in beta.
I would like to see the three plasmoid buttons in the normal KDE4 desktop as well. The sliding controller is not very functional from a usability pov.
I hope plasma devs are reaeding this 😉

hmm, are you sure? i don’t get that alert, checked all php pages they all seem clean.
The video looks like you guys should really work on integrating Xbar / “mac-style” global menu bar. In the video, the Plasma bar on top is replaced by a normal menu bar when launching apps. That doesn’t really integrate well.
If you pursue to work demonstrated at http://qiacat.blogspot.com/2009/03/gnome-global-menu-in-kde4.html then all app menu bars will nicely integrate with Plasma.
Is it for download yet?
